Scope and content

Photographs of the installation 'Once Upon a Time' by Steve McQueen on view at the South London Gallery from 17 September to 7 November 2004.

The inspiration for Once Upon a Time are photographs sent into space by Nasa in the 1970s which intended to show aliens what life on Earth is like. The installation involved the projection of 116 images, replicating those still travelling through space at a speed of 150 million miles per year on the Voyager space probes that began their exploratory journey across the universe in 1977.
