Scope and content

Photographs of the solo show of Christian Boltanski: Les Abonnes du Telephone which took place at the South London Gallery from 27 March to 5 May 2002. The artist transformed the space into an extraordinary library of about 3,000 telephone directories from all over the world. There was also a specially commissioned sound piece in which the names of the 12,000 registered voters living within ten minutes’ walk of the Gallery are read out from different points around the space.
Les Abonnés du Téléphone was a kind of archive of the whole world, in one gallery space.
