Scope and content
Installation photographs of the group exhibition 'Depth of Field: Images of Lagos and London' which was held at the South London Gallery from 10 March to 8 May 2005. It included works by Kelechi Amadi-Obi, Uchechukwa James-Iroha, Toyosi Odunsi, Amaize Ojeikere, Emeka Okereke and Toyin Sokefun, the six artists who make up Depth of Field (DOF).
Artists’ collective, Depth of Field (DOF), live and work in Lagos, Nigeria. The artists assign themselves a weekly theme and meet a week later to hold a critical session on the resulting images. Their work largely centres on the vibrant street life of Lagos. For this, DOF’s first exhibition in the UK, each artist produced a new body of work, depicting all that urban Lagos had to offer, including images of crime, affluence, poverty and a thriving hip hop music scene. The DOF photographers follow a well-established tradition of photo-documentary in West Africa, but they combined it with painterly and sculptural qualities.
Depth of Field was part of London's year long celebration of contemporary and past African cultures, Africa O5, and was supported by Arts Council England and British Airways West Africa with media sponsorship from Pluk Magazine and events on 17 March and 5 May funded by Camberwell Residential Academic Fellowship Trust (Craft).
