Scope and content
Installation photographs of the group exhibition Distant Voices which was held at the South London Gallery from 28 April to 20 May 1994 and organised by Susan Copping. It included works by Milena Dopitová, Ivan Kafka, Petr Nikl, Václaw Stratil.
The artists, members of such groups as the Stubborns, 12/15 and the Monday Group, were chosen because they reflected the highly individual styles prevalent in Czech art, often influenced by the political, social and cultural environment. Ivan Kafka and Vaclav Stratil were from a middle generation of artists who worked within the genres of landscape, portraiture and documentary, while Milena Dopitova and Petr Nikl were from a younger generation whose work included painting, sculpture and photography. A puppet show performance by Nikl took place on the evening of the private view for the exhibition. Nikl also performed two further puppet shows to school groups of children as part of the education programme.
The exhibition toured to the John Hansard Gallery in Southampton in 1995.
