Scope and content
Photographs of the live performance 'Reading One Million Years' by the Japanese artist On Kawara which took place in Trafalgar Square from 29 March to 5 April 2004. This performance was a South London Gallery off-site project and was made possible with support from Bloomberg and Lottery funding from Arts Council England. The work had been previously presented in cities around the world, including Paris, New York, Kassel and Kwangju.
In a glass structure at the foot of Nelson’s Column, a man and a woman sat side by side at small desks and took turns to read a single year from On Kawara’s ten-volume work, One Million Years.
