Scope and content

Photographs of Shaheen Merali's audio-visual installation 'Channels, Echoes and Empty Chairs' which was exhibited at the South London Gallery from 28 September to 30 October 1994. Arranged in fifteen light-boxes with a dynamic sound environment, the installation sought to question the perception of South Asian women and men within Western culture. Visitors to the gallery were able to create their own score as they moved around the gallery due to Merali's innovative use of sound beams.

Merali's installation shared the main gallery space at the SLG with Michael Petry's ‘The Garden of Enlightenment’. Although the two installations were conceived separately and dealt with different subject matters, at the time the point was made that in each there was an essential 'cosmic element'.
